Feb 12, 1. I have a j Stevens model 87a. Feb 12, 2. Not that uncommon for that model after they get wore some. When I was a kid we had one that would shoot fine with long rifles but would often shoot 3 or 4 shorts at a time and then sometimes jam.
Thru the years I have seen and heard this often on this model. I think parts are still available to fix these. Feb 12, 3. Morning, Chaos- welcome to the forum. When you get a minute stop by the intro thread and tell us about yourself. Slang term for your rifle was the "Gill Gun" due to the vent slits at the chamber. There are a lot of them out there somewhere- they were made from about You may find the same rifle bearing the name Savage, Springfield, Stevens, or Fox- Savage bought Stevens in aboutand there is a somewhat incestuous relation between the companies.
Fun little rifles, unusual fire control system. Feb 12, 4. It's not malfunctioning when it shoots full auto Feb 12, 5. Chaos- I doubt that it is stamped "full auto". Marking should be "automatic". Meaning the semi auto setting, as opposed to the single shot mode. Pulling bolt handle out or pressing it in switches from one to other. IF you rifle is firing more than one shot per pull of the trigger, it is NOT functiloning as designed. None of these were built as full auto firearms. Markings look like this?
Feb 12, 6. Yes they look just like that Feb 12, 7. If you pull the trigger- and it goes bang more than once before you pull the trigger again, yes, it is malfunctioning. IF it is doing that, a good first step is to field strip it and clean it good. Semi-automatic means pull trigger, goes bang once.
Pull trigger again, goes bang again. Full auto- pull trigger, goes bang bang bang bang until you release trigger. Your rifle should NOT do that. Last edited: Feb 12, Feb 12, 8. The last time I shot it it emptyed the tube with one triggering pullOrder by:. Available to:. This is New. In the Package.

Hello all! I'm new to the forums and I hope yall are having a fantastic day! I recently pulled out my old rifle which has been sitting in a closet since I was about 15 years old, my dad gave it to me but I don't think he knew much about it because he thought it was junk and was about to throw it out.
I'm not sure where he got it but you can tell it's had a rough life, neither him nor I have ever cleaned the thing but it has always shot fairly good for me, no jams whatsoever, it's the only rifle I own so I figured I'd clean it up.
I took it apart and it was pretty nasty, so I cleaned the barrel real good and sprayed everything down with some brake clean and re-greased the parts that needed it, I plan to have the crown on the barrel re-done and whoever owned it before my family painted the barrel and did a very very poor job, didn't even tape off the stock I'll post some pictures of the "before" rifle and in the near future when I'm finished I'll be sure to post the "after" pics. I'd appreciate it if anyone could help me out with some info on this rifle, where I might find some parts, just general knowledge, also I already know that it was made somewhere aroundthen again I read somewhere else that it could be a early 50's model so I'm a bit confused, any info would be appreciated much!!
The patent 's are, RE,so I know it cannot be made before as they didn't have the feed mechanism for a repeating fire-arm semi-auto before then, well thats about all I have for now, hope to talk to yall soon, have a great day!!
HillbillyChromeJun 22, Jun 22, 2. Welcome to Gun and Game! I'll let others chime in with potential parts sources but they are interesting rifles. Being able to lock the bolt closed for a single shot may make these somewhat unique for semi auto. Don't use it as a semi auto with anything but Long Rifle cartridges. Jun 23, 3. Wiki User I do know that I bought one made before ,for Sears,it was called the "Ranger" Mod.
I am presently waiting on an answer from Weaver as to if they make one ,but, apparently ,one customer is not worth an answer as its been a week now!
In the 60's,I believe, they were given another modification with the more streamlined and economical plastic bolt plug which gave it a more modern appearance.
At varous times during it's production the bolt knob has been changed and made more modern and easier to grasp, however I like the wierd way mine looks as it is the big old one. It fires long rifles as a semi -auto, but, longs and shorts are fired more as a bolt action ,which the design accomodates by having the provision, when locked and loaded ,to be able to push the bolt handle in to the bolt to lock it closed and after fireing pull it out ,back and forward to chamber the next round this is,at least in my experience a function unique to this action and a handy one for hunting where noise is a consideration.
I have heard they are a cranky action, however when I bought mine it was dirty and after the first 10 rounds and some WD I fired rds. The ammo was Rem.
I hope this helps you out. Shootrj Stevens also made this rifle for Montgomery Ward Known as the Wards Western Field model 87A which had a plastic stock that looks like wood. Feb 26, 1. Any one know where I can find one? I tried Numrichs', no luck. Any other ideas? Feb 27, 2. I think I have one.
I'll look for you later, I think it might be on my laptop. I had a hard drive meltdown here on my desktop computer a few weeks ago and lost a lot of good info and pictures. But I think I did see a few 87A manual pages on the laptop the other day. If so, I'll post them. GunHuggerFeb 27, Feb 27, 3. Sorry, I looked but didn't find it. I guess I lost it too. But I did find a parts breakdown for the Savage 6. The Savage 6 series, the Stevens 87a and the Springfield 87a and almost the same.
What were you hoping to find in the manual? I have owned and worked on these rifles, maybe I can help. Feb 27, 4. Hey Gunhugger! Thanks for looking. I mostly want to know how to disassemble the rifle for cleaning. This rifle belonged to my late father, so it is priceless to me. I don't want to screw something up by blindly taking it apart!! One request. Keep it simple please! I have some basic knowledge of guns and gun function, but compared to most of the folks here, my knowledge is limited.

Mar 10, 8.Discussion in ' Savage ' started by gsbuickmanMay 18, Log in or Sign up. A sweet lil' Stevens Savage 87A. May 18, 1. Hiya Guys, So I've been looking to replace the Savage Stevens model 6A that I wound up selling a few years ago, because I've been kicking myself in the proverbial butt ever since.
Well, I dropped a listing on our local gun Grapevine yesterday looking for a nice old 22 rifle that shoots 22 shorts, 22 long and 22 LR in a nice wood stock, just to see what would turn up. Sure enough about an hour later a guy hit me up with this little model 87a, after talking with him about it I jumped all over it.
It's an old gilgun and identical to my old 6A in every way. The 87A is from Savage Arms Chicopee, mass. Circa 46'' just after they moved to Chicopee.
Not only does this have the distinctive gill slits on either side of the receiver, it also has the bolt delay trigger. After you fire a round as long as you keep the trigger pulled back the bolt will stay back as well. As soon as you reset the trigger the bolt closes as well. He also recently had this into Buckhorn Gun and Pawn where they serviced it, replaced the extractor and the springs. The barrel is tight and clean and the rifling is sharp so this thing is practically as good as new.
Even though the pictures don't show it due to the lighting he refinished the stock and put several coats of urethane on it, it looks pretty nice. Now I just need to find a scope mount for it and a little 3x9x40 to finish it off. That'll give me a pretty good start with this old gem. Last edited: May 18, May 19, 2. May 20, 3.
